Ronald P. Mathison

Ron Mathison has extensive experience in restructuring and financing companies in both the public and private markets gained over a career that has spanned nearly 30 years. He is the founder of Matco and has served as a member of the Board of Directors and as Chairman of Matco Investments since its formation in 1999. Ron also serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Matco Investments and Matco Capital.

Ron is deeply skilled in management and corporate governance. Prior to founding Matco, Ron was a director and principal of Peters & Co., an investment firm specializing in the energy industry. Ron was also one of three principals at Peters & Co. Capital, a private merchant banking entity that is widely associated with numerous restructurings of oil and natural gas exploration and production companies and oilfield service companies.

Ron has co-founded several companies including Calfrac Well Services and Western Energy Services. He remains chair of both companies. Ron has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Manitoba and is a Chartered Accountant, a Chartered Business Valuator and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation.

In 2012 Ron received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and in 2015 was granted a Fellows of the Chartered Professional Accountants Alberta. That same year he was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame. He sits on the Strategic Advisory Board of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary, where he established the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education.


Vice Chairman / MATCO Investments

Michael J. Tims

Michael J. Tims, C.M., LL.D.(Hon.), CBV, is Vice Chairman of MATCO Investments Ltd., a private investment holding company. He joined MATCO after a 33-year career at Peters & Co. Limited, a Canadian investment firm specializing in energy. Michael served as the longtime Chairman of Peters & Co., and before that as President & CEO.

Mike holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with Distinction; Gold Medalist) from the University of Calgary. He holds an MBA degree from Harvard Business School; and he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary.

Recognition includes: a Member of the Order of Canada (2018); the Founders’ Award from the Fraser Institute (2018); the Woodrow Wilson Award (Canada Institute) for Corporate Citizenship (2016); a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oil & Gas Council (2015); and induction into the Canadian Investment Industry Hall of Fame (2014) and the Alberta Business Hall of Fame (2021).

Mike is the immediate past Chairman of the National Gallery of Canada, and previously served as Vice Chair of the Gallery’s Foundation. He has been engaged with the University of Calgary, in a number of roles, for over four decades. Among numerous other commitments, he previously served as Chairman of: the Canadian Investor Protection Fund; the Investment Dealers Association of Canada; the United Way of Calgary and Area; and West Island College (Alberta).


Managing Director / MATCO Development

Robert Millar

Rob Millar is the Managing Director of Matco Development Corp. He has over 40 years’ experience in commercial real estate with a solid emphasis on real estate finance. His career began in the investment division of a major Canadian life insurance company, but for most of his career he has been an owner of private businesses involved in structured finance and ownership of commercial real estate.

In the early part of his career he was involved in the private placement and private securitization of commercial mortgages, and later created a mortgage fund which acted as a hedging and warehouse vehicle for the creation of publicly rated mortgage bonds. Rob’s real estate development experience is highlighted by the twenty years of work that began at concept and led up to the completion of Eighth Avenue Place with Ron Mathison.

Rob and his family are committed supporters of Inclusion Alberta, a nonprofit that supports children and adults with developmental disabilities, and together with his daughter own the largest special needs school bus transportation company in Canada.

Rob received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Calgary. 


Managing Director / MATCO Capital

Ryan F. Jennings

Ryan Jennings is the Managing Director of Matco Capital. He joined in 2003, becoming a partner in 2008.  He has served as director, officer or trustee of several of Matco Capital’s portfolio companies.

Ryan received his Bachelor of Commerce degree (with distinction) from the University of Alberta and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation.


Chief Financial Officer / MATCO Investments

Ian Hill

Ian Hill is the Chief Financial Officer at Matco Investments. He has a range of experience in real estate development, investment management, private office and tax compliance. He has served as corporate controller and performed tax consulting and management for a number of companies including start-ups, telecommunications, oil and gas exploration and entertainment networks.

Ian received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and has his CPA, CA designation.
